The Trans Canada Highway (#104 to #105) in Nova Scotia links to Newfoundland via the Marine Atlantic Ferries departing from North Sydney, Nova Scotia (see below for more details). Labrador is also now accessible via the Trans-Labrador Highway, which connects Goose Bay to the province of Quebec.
Within Newfoundland & Labrador - The Trans-Canada Highway (Route 1) crosses Newfoundland west to east from Port aux Basques to St. John's, a distance of 905 kilometres. Secondary highways along the route provide many fascinating, "off-the-beaten-track" side trips.
Route 500 is a gravel road that crosses Labrador from Happy Valley-Goose Bay in the east to Labrador City/Wabush in the west. The road is sometimes soft in spring, and passable only by four-wheel drive vehicles. Distance is approximately 525 kilometres and travel times of 9 hours should be expected.
For road conditions in Labrador: Tel: 709-896-7840
From Labrador West you can drive into Quebec on partially paved Route 389 which runs 581 kilometres to Baie Comeau on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. Anticipated travel time is 8.5 hours.
Highway Cameras: In an effort to provide the motoring public in the province with the most up-to-date road and driving conditions, the Department of Transportation and Works has installed digital cameras at five weigh scale sites along the Trans Canada Highway (TCH). These sites include Foxtrap near St. John’s, Goobies, Grand Falls - Windsor, Pynn's Brook and Channel-Port-aux Basques. We also have a camera on Route 220 at Salt Pond on the Burin Peninsula, one on Route 430 near Flower's Cove on the Northern Peninsula, one in Happy Valley - Goose Bay, Labrador, and one near L'Anse Au Loup, Labrador on Route 510. Our newest camera is on the TCH near Springdale. All 10 cameras are available via the following internet address: http://www.roads.gov.nl.ca/cameras/
