Avalon Region
It’s where Newfoundland and North America begin. The Avalon Region combines the fun-loving charm and history of St. John’s, the provincial capital, with outstanding coastal scenery, theatre, music and wildlife watching. Touring the region is a lesson in diversity. "The Call of the Wild" could come as easily from an Ecological Reserve as from a lively St. John’s pub. Colorful city scenes and pristine natural beauty compete for visitors’ attention.
Routing
Beginning at the "Isthmus of Avalon," a rugged, rocky section of the peninsula, the Avalon Region is disected by the Trans-Canada Highway East (Route 1). The region starts at Goobies (where the Eastern and Avalon Regions meet) and runs along Route 1 to the provincial capital of St. John's. Driving Distance: 162 km / 100 mi. Driving Time by Motorcoach: Approx. 1 1/2 hours.
Along this route, side trips are necessary to experience the best this region has to offer. From here, a side trip to the Cape Shore is a popular tour. Whitbourne to Cape St. Mary's is approx. 115 km (71.5 mi). Driving Time by Motorcoach: Approx. 1 1/2 hours.
The Irish Loop extends south from St. John's to Holyrood and along the Southern Shore and the eastern side of St. Mary's Bay. Minimum Time Required: 1 Day
