Chisasibi
Each summer the pow-wow at Chisasibi draws people from everywhere to experience the culture of the Cree. A traditional pow-wow is held with special dancers and guests to celebrate the traditional way of life. Even if you won’t be there for the pow-wow, the village offers an opportunity to experience the Cree way of life. Sleep in a teepee for example.

The Spillway, also known as The Staircase for Giants, is part of the Robert-Bourassa Hydroelectric Generating Station on the La Grande River. The Robert Bourassa is the largest underground powerhouse in the world. The fourhour guided tour covers a 25km (15mi) route and includes a bus ride, a drive along the edge of the 53-storey dam and going underground through a tunnel two thirds of a mile long.

Coming to an end in Raddison is James Bay Road. This 381km (238mi) long road is the longest service-free stretch of road in Canada and begins in Matagami. The road travels along the taiga landscape and crosses some big rivers. A sight not to be missed along this route are the rapids of the Rupert River.

Nemaska
North from Nemaska, the smallest Cree village in the region, you enter the largest wildlife reserve in Québec-The Albanel, Mistissini and Waconichi Lakes. Lake Mistissini is Québec’s biggest freshwater lake and as large as an interior sea. The diversity of fish species will appeal to enthusiasts, who can catch lake trout, brook trout and walleye all in the same lake. Visitors are required to register with SEPAQ for all activities in the reserve.

Chibougamau
Housed in the heart of a mountain, you’ll find the Mining Discovery Centre amidst the remains of old Bruneau Mine. A tour will take you through the evolution of mines throughout the ages and show you the work of miners. A sound and light show will take you back to the beginning of life on earth.

The Village of Mistissini is one of the largest Cree villages in Northern Québec. With an extensive history of trade, the village was also once known as Baie-de-Poste. Mistissini’s name originates from the Cree term “Big Rock”. The village is positioned next to Lake Mistissini, making it ideal for an exciting fishing excursion. Outdoor adventurers are sure to enjoy visiting this community!

The Cree community of Waswanipi has a population of approximately 1200, and derives its name from the Cree term for “light waters”. Located along a river junction, Waswanipi has historically been noted for natural resource development. Annually the community celebrates Chiiwetaau or “going home”, a celebration of the community’s past.
