Placentia / Argentia Area

As you make your way along the Cape Shore, enjoy the Irish culture and hospitality of the Placentia/Argentia area. Placentia was the French capital of Newfoundland in the 17th century. Visitors can enjoy the view of Placentia Bay and a fortification erected by the French in 1692.

Visit Castle Hill National Historic Site of Canada, enjoy the commanding view of the Town of Placentia from this former French fort. Along route 102, visit the site of the former American naval base, Argentia. Just minutes away is Ship Harbour, the site of the signing of the Atlantic Charter (a precursor to the United Nations) in 1941 by Franklin D. Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. During Argentia Days in July visit the International Museum of the Atlantic Allies located at the VIC, Argentia. The exhibit focuses on the American presence at Argentia during and after World War II.
