Gravenhurst-the Gateway to Muskoka

This region of Muskoka is famous for its fall colour-viewing tours, and for its 400-plus kms of professionally groomed snowmobile trails attracting winter visitors.

Gravenhurst is the birthplace of Dr. Norman Bethune, surgeon, inventor, and humanitarian. He is famous for his inventions and innovative techniques used in thoracic surgery and the treatment of tuberculosis. Bethune created the first mobile service unit used in battlefield medical treatment during the Spanish Civil War. He died in 1939 caring for the sick in China during the Chinese Revolution.

Bethune House
Dr. Bethune’s former home is a Parks Canada National Historic Site. The Victorian-style home is restored to the 1890 period. Here visitors can see how life was lived at the end of the 19th century in rural Ontario.
