Windsor
Sitting directly across the Detroit River from Detroit, MI, Windsor is the southernmost city in Canada, and the country’s home to the ‘big three’ automakers, Hiram Walker’s Canadian Club Distillery (still on it’s original 1858 site), and Ontario’s first casino. Windsor and Essex County’s history tells of the first skirmishes which became the War of 1812, Al Capone and the Purple Gang, and the final terminus of the Underground Railroad - a network of people who assisted fugitive slaves in the U.S. to reach freedom in Canada in the early 1800s.
The Detroit - Windsor Tunnel, opened in 1930, is the second busiest passenger car crossing between the United States and Canada. The Tunnel, which runs under the Detroit River, is 5,160 feet (1,573 m) long.
